With the release of the iOS 5 beta, Apple has updated the iPad keyboard to enable users to undock and split the keyboard in either landscape or portrait orientation!
In any app where the keyboard can be used, users can now undock and split the keyboard for easier typing with two thumbs. This is especially useful when holding the iPad in portrait, since now you don’t have to uncomfortably stretch your hands to type.
By tapping and holding on the very bottom right corner button (hides the keyboard on iOS 4.3.3), users are presented with a pop-up to undock or split the keyboard (the keyboard can also be split using multitouch; just pull the keyboard apart). You can also use that button to move the keyboard up and down along the iPad display.
To put the keyboard back, either use multitouch to bring the keyboard together or tap and hold the bottom right corner button again to merge.
