iOS 5: Google Maps Gets Routes And Printing Features

by on June 11th, 2011

If you’re using the iOS 5 beta, and you use Maps on your iOS device, you’ll love the new features in Google Maps.

Routes

With the updated iOS 5, users can now choose between multiple routes when traveling to a destination. When you set up a route in Maps, you are presented with at least one or two routes to get to where you want to go. On the map you’ll see small “Route 1″ or “Route 2″ signs.

These available routes are a great addition to Maps because before Maps only provided one route. While one route is not bad, there was almost always a better route to go that the Maps app did not present.

To toggle between routes, simply tap on the “Route” sign or tap on the actual route (road map).

Print

Also new with Maps in iOS 5 is the option to Print your maps right from the iPad! Printing does require a local WiFi network and compatible AirPrint printer. While it is easier to just pull the map up on your iPad, if your iPad is offline the Maps printing function could be useful.

To access the Print menu, tap on the top-right corner on the Maps app (where you would change the Map view, traffic view, etc)
