iPad iBookstore to Include Entire Project Gutenburg Catalog?

by on March 25th, 2010

The iPad launch is a coming in just over a week. What surprises can we see in store? Well, according to AppAdvice, they have some exclusive screenshots that the iBookstore will include 30,000 free eBook titles from the entire Project Gutenburg catalog.

The Gutenburg Project is a library supported by volunteers that supports over 30,000 free eBooks from the public domain. To have this at the tip of your fingertips on the iPad would be widely supported by many people. Maybe it’s time to start reading again? Maybe Project Gutenberg Canada will be included soon too!

Addition of the Gutenberg Library would be an enormous coup for the iPad. I am considering purchasing an iPad for my father, whose eyesight is failing. I searched both the US and Canadian Apple sights for information regarding whether the iBooks app will read to a visually impaired person. Although there is no information that I can find to answer that question, I was curious to note that the US site lists iBooks in the Features list, but the Canadian site does not. Either this is an oversight (which I doubt) or else it means there is some question whether the iBooks app will be available outside the US. FYI – iBooks is also not listed on the UK site.

Right now, iBooks is US only. (Sadly, I am looking forward to the Canadian version.) On the iBooks page of the iPad features, it mentions voiceover works on iBooks too. http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/ibooks.html

There are so many iPad question waiting to be answered for US iPad owners, let alone international owners. We're going to have to wait and see. Either way, International owners will get the bookstore soon.
