Citing no specific reason, starting today Rogers has relaunched their flexible data plan for iPad. Originally expiring on February 7, 2011, the plan has been extended until September 11, 2011.

While the existing non-contracted Rogers iPad data options remain in-market, the new flex data options provide customers with additional data choices. For reference, the existing iPad data plans are listed below:

For those of you trying to get Personal HotSpot working with Rogers in Ontario but are receiving a “Contact Rogers to activate HotSpot” message, there is currently a province wide 3G outage which is affecting the ability to activate HotSpot on your iPhone. I’ve been told to wait until tomorrow to test the Personal HotSpot feature on the iPhone.

With Bell and Virgin Mobile launching flexible data plans for iPad, Rogers didn’t want to be left out of the action. Effective tomorrow, Rogers is launching all new flexible data plans for iPad that are set to expire on January 7, 2011.

For the Holiday 2010 quarter, Rogers has launched a set of new data sharing options for iPad.

The original Rogers data-only iPad plans are still available and for reference, they are listed below:

• $15/month: 250MB (auto-renewal every 30 days)
• $35/month: 5GB (auto-renewal every 30 days)

As many are aware, these iPad data plans have no contract, are essentially pay-as-you-go data options, and everything is done right on the iPad.

The new data sharing options however come in two forms: a Voice Plan with Shareable Data or a Data Sharing Add-On.

1.) Voice Shareable Data Packages

If you are looking to start new service with Rogers on a smartphone or are an existing customer with a smartphone who wants to have a voice/data sharing bundle, then you have three packages to choose from:

$55 Package (plus 2.43 GRRF in BC/AB/ON)

• Minutes: 200 daytime minutes
• Evenings/Weekends: Unlimited weekends; Evenings from 9PM – 7AM
• Choice of One Feature: Unlimited Messages or My5 Canada-wide or Unlimited Local Network Calling or 6PM Early Evening Calling or Double Your Minutes
• Data Included: 1GB
• Contract: 3 Years

$65 Package (plus 2.43 GRRF in BC/AB/ON)

• Monthly fee: $65
• Minutes: 300 daytime minutes
• Evenings/Weekends: Unlimited weekends; Evenings from 9PM – 7AM
• Choice of One Feature: Unlimited Messages or My5 Canada-wide or Unlimited Local Network Calling or 6PM Early Evening Calling or Double Your Minutes
• Data Included: 1GB
• Contract: 3 Years

$70 Package (plus 2.43 GRRF in BC/AB/ON)

• Monthly fee: $70
• Minutes: 500 daytime minutes
• Evenings/Weekends: Unlimited weekends; Evenings from 9PM – 7AM
• Choice of One Feature: Unlimited Messages or My5 Canada-wide or Unlimited Local Network Calling or 6PM Early Evening Calling or Double Your Minutes
• Data Include: 1GB
• Contract: 3 Years

Each of the three above plans provides service for one smartphone.

After you have a plan chosen, you can share that 1GB data plan with your iPad by adding $15.00 (plus $1.96 GRRF) to the existing plan price. Note that this $15.00 extra can be removed at any time.

The second option is a Data Sharing Add-On:

2.) Smartphone Data Share Plans

If you are already with Rogers and are satisfied with your existing smartphone voice plan, then you have three data sharing add-on options:

$30 Data Sharing Add-On

• Monthly fee: $30
• Data Include: 1GB
• Contract: 3 Years

$45 Data Sharing Add-On

• Monthly fee: $45
• Data Include: 2GB
• Contract: 3 Years

$60 Data Sharing Add-On

• Monthly fee: $60
• Data Include: 5GB
• Contract: 3 Years

In other words, any of the above three plans can be added to your existing smartphone voice plan to provide service to one smartphone.

After you have a data add-on chosen, you can share that data amount with your iPad by adding $15.00 (plus $1.96 GRRF) to the existing plan price. Note that this $15.00 extra can be removed at any time.

Overall, these are not the greatest value options available, but we are talking about Rogers after all.

Since the summer of 2008, whenever a new iPhone is released, Rogers has made available their amazing $30 6GB data plan.

With the launch of the iPad in Canada this year, Rogers extended this year’s $30 6GB data plan to be shared between a smartphone and an iPad 3G.

In other words, if you have a Rogers smartphone (Blackberry, iPhone, etc) and you want to share your data plan with your iPad 3G, an extra $20 per month allows to do so. However, with the 6GB data plan option available, sharing 6GB is far better than sharing 1GB (or whatever your current data plan is)!

Well, each summer Rogers releases the $30 6GB data plan and each September, the promotion comes to a close.

Effective September 30 2010, the $30 6GB data plan will no longer be offered (until next year). So if you have a smartphone and were looking to share that data with your iPad 3G, now is the time to grab this data plan before it is gone ($30 normally gives users 1GB!).

The plan is available to both new and existing Rogers customers on a 3-year agreement (contract is for the smartphone, not iPad).

So I own the wifi-only iPad. Which is fine, as I work from home and use wifi most of the time.

So can someone remind me why Rogers makes it so darn expensive to use data I already pay for, on gadgets I’ve already forked over a ton of cash for? Sure, I could buy a more expensive plan, for data I know I don’t really need, and would only use rarely for actual tethering. So I’d rather not.

And anyway, I already pay Rogers a pretty penny each month. Add to that the cost of the iPhone and the iPad and I just wonder – will we ever stop getting screwed over just for wanting to use our iDevices the way we want to use them?

I know there’s an alternative. I hear you cry: use MiWi ($9.95 from the Cydia store), but why should I have to jailbreak just to use two devices I own in a way I know they can, if Apple and Rogers would just let them. Gah.

Today, Rogers announced that with the launch of the iPhone 4 on July 30, 2010, any smartphone customer who activates on a three-year voice and data contract can choose the Rogers 6GB data plan for $30.

Essentially, this data plan can be added to any in-market voice plan before September 30, 2010. If you are a new or existing wireless customer of Rogers, you are eligible for the $30 6GB data plan.

What makes this plan unique for iPad 3G owners is that if you have a Rogers smartphone with that 6GB data plan, you can share your iPad 3G to the 6GB plan. In other words, your smartphone and iPad 3G can use the same data plan.

Pricing

Starting July 30, and for a limited time until September 30 2010, customers on a 6 GB plan will be able to share data between smartphones and their iPad 3G for an extra $20/month (plus Government Regulatory Recovery Fee).

The obvious down side here is the extra $20 + GRRF + tax you have to pay on top of the already $30 data plan, but it still may be cheaper overall than having a separate data plan for the iPad 3G and a smartphone.

The iPad’s launch in Canada has been quite successful so far according to your latest opinions on the device. I already told you my review of the iPad but what I haven’t touched on is which network is best for iPad 3G users? We have covered the iPad 3G plans from Rogers, Telus and Bell. As for which carrier to go with, that comes down to your personal preference.

However, the differences can be as follows:
- Bell and Telus have the newest 3G network that is not as saturated as Rogers
- Rogers customers can activate their data plans right on the iPad; Bell/Telus users are required to call in to activate their data plans
- Poor experiences with either Rogers/Bell/Telus will easily make you switch to another carrier

Personally, I think iPad 3G users should choose the network that has the best coverage, the fastest speeds and a decent price (oh, if only it was that easy). One big issue that hasn’t been talked about much is network speed. This is where all you iPad 3G users will chime in to share your networks speeds based on your location/carrier! What provider did you go with for your iPad 3G?

How to Test your iPad 3G Network Speed

1. Download the free Speedtest.net iPhone app onto your iPad.
2. Run the speedtest over 3G on your iPad. Once you have your results, inform us in the comments by copying and pasting the following template:

Location: Vancouver (insert your own city)
Carrier: Rogers/Telus/Bell (choose ONE network)
Download speed: 3.5mb/sec (insert your speed)

This ought to be interesting to see which areas and networks get the fastest speeds for the iPad 3G!
