iPad – Print Files From Anywhere Using Your Dropbox

Hello everyone! Have you ever wanted or needed to print something from your iPad? If you’re like me, every so often you may have a need to print from your iPad. I currently don’t have a printer that’s capable of printing documents to my iPad so I was really happy to find this neat utility.

I have discovered a small program (it’s a simple “.vbs” utility for you geeks) that after you run it, allows you to print files from your iPad using Dropbox. Although the author of the utility only mentions mobile devices on the web site, and not the iPad, I still decided to give it a try. I have been successful so far and have been able to print using GoodReader and Office HD.

Here is a quick overview to get you printing:

Make sure that you have Dropbox on the computer that is connected to the printer.
To send print jobs from the iPad make sure you have an app that is capable of connecting to Dropbox.
Download the zip file printing utility, unzip and double-click the eprint.vbs file (see the source code). The script will create a sub-folder inside your main Dropbox folder called “PrintQueue”. This is where your print jobs will queue up and another sub-folder called “logs” will be created where all the completed jobs will be archived.

You can now print files from your iPad. Just send a file from your iPad to the Dropbox ready app or Dropbox mobile app and place it in the “PrintQueue” folder. If you are sitting at your computer doing a test run, you will see a message on your desktop indicating that the file has been added to your Dropbox. Your printer will begin printing the file shortly thereafter.

Geek Tips: The PrintQueue folder will show up on any computer or mobile device you sync with Dropbox, but will only print from the computer running the vbs script. So, you’ll want this script to always run on your primary computer. Simply drag the eprint.vbs file to your Startup folder, and then it’ll always be ready to print your files whenever your computer is running.

Jailbreak iPad iOS 3.2/3.2.1 with JailbreakMe.com

A long time ago, during the days of my original iPhone there was a jailbreak that was released by just visiting a URL in mobile Safari. The site was called JailbreakMe.com and now it has been brought back to life by @comex (et al) to jailbreak your iPad on iOS 3.2/3.2.1.

All you have to do is visit the following URL in Safari on your iPad:

http://www.jailbreakme.com

As always, you take on any risk caused by this jailbreak. But so far, people have had success on their iPhones, but some have lost MMS/FaceTime capability. Also issues of not working on the iPad on iOS 3.2.1.

Persons who are squeamish about liquids near their electronic devices should avoid.

If iPad were a dish, there are no problem!

YouTube Updates Website To Support iPad, iPhone

This week, YouTube announced that it has updated its mobile website to support a modern browsing experience found on devices such as an iPad or iPhone.

The videos seem to have all been converted to HTML5, h.264, or equivalent supported video formats that work with iPhone, iPad, and other mobile devices.

The update website can be found at http://m.youtube.com from your mobile device. YouTube notes the following enhancements:

It’s really fast.
The user interface incorporates larger, more touch-friendly elements, making it easier to access videos on the go.
It incorporates the features and functionality you’ve come to expect from the .com site, like search query suggestions, the options to create playlists, the ability to designate “favorite,” “like” or “unlike” videos directly from your device.
As we make improvements to Youtube.com, you’ll see them quickly follow on our mobile site, unlike native apps which are not updated as frequently.

The updates to YouTube seem to make YouTube more functional than the native iPhone app but just like in the app, the new mobile website of YouTube plays perfectly on the Safari browser on iPad or iPhone.

Google Docs Viewer Works on iPad

Google might be trying to “go to war” with Apple, but they have continued to offer support for iPad and iPhone users (ie Google Earth and Gmail updates–when’s Google Reader coming next?!). Their recent update to Google Documents is their Google Docs viewer. This new mobile feature will allow you to view any uploaded documents without having to download them, which is a great timesaver.

Here’s what they had to say from the Google Mobile Blog the other day:

Today we’re also releasing a mobile version of the Google Docs viewer for Android, iPhone and iPad to help you view PDFs, .ppt, .doc and .docx files you’ve uploaded to your documents list, without needing to download the file.
With our mobile viewer you can switch quickly between pages and pan/zoom within a page. On your iPhone and iPad, you can pinch to zoom in or out.
You can try it out by going to docs.google.com on your iPad and select any document in these formats that you’ve previously uploaded.

I tried viewing some uploaded Word documents in Google Documents on my iPad and this feature works great. Give it a shot and let me know what you think!

New Compose Interface for Gmail on iPad

For all you Gmail web interface users out there, we have some good news for you. Google has updated their interface on the iPad with a new compose window and more. Here’s what they had to say on their Google Mobile Blog:

Today we’re happy to announce an improved experience for writing emails on Gmail web interface for iPad. When you write an email you’ll now get a big full screen compose window instead of splitting the screen between your inbox and the compose view. More text is visible at once and there are no more distractions with messages on the side. We’ve also fixed problems that prevented scrolling on long messages. Thanks to everyone who reported the issue via the ‘Send feedback’ feature at the bottom of the screen.

I use the Mail app to access Gmail on the iPad. However, I do load up the web interface when I need to search for emails on the server. Thanks Google for keeping the updates coming to iPad users! Here are some pictures below:

Apple Launches HTML5 Advocacy Page

Earlier on the evening of June 3, Apple launched a new web page dedicated to HTML5 and open web standards. With the recent drama and advertising campaign coming from Adobe, which is pushing Flash, this new HTML5 web page is essentially Apple’s response.

The new HTML5 web page is a showcase for what developers can do with HTML5 and open web standards. In other words, showcasing what can be done without the need of using Flash, a technology that is not a web standard.

The web site showcases seven impressive examples of the power of HTML5: Video, Typography, Gallery, Transitions, Audio, 360, and VR. The interactive demos, usable on Mac/PC or any iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, are actually extremely impressive and definitely deserve a look.

The only downside to the whole page is that it must be viewed in Safari, whether that’s on your iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac, or PC, it has to be Safari (although Google’s Chrome seems to work). Users with Internet Explorer or Firefox receive a prompt to download Safari.

This demo was designed with the latest web standards supported by Safari.

The web site continues to indicate Apple’s dedication to open web standards (CSS3, JavaScript) and HTML5, along with its commitment to WebKit, the render engine which Apple played a large part in making popular and is used by many web browsers.

Just playing and viewing the demos on the page makes me excited to see the power of HTML5 and the things that are to come. Definitely take a look and let us know what you think!

iPad App Tracker

After having an iPhone for several years I’ve become accustomed to my favorite iPhone app sites. Each site offers a different view on iPhone apps such as what are the best iPhone games, books, videos , etc. So what about the iPad? I haven’t been able to locate a comprehensive iPad app site….until now.

PadGadget has created a new area on their web site for iPad apps. They currently have the Top 100 Free and Paid applications, mostly due to the App Store limitations, but they are working on offering more options over the next couple days. The web site is very colorful, easy to navigate and is updated several times a day. You can view the apps by rank, ratings, price, changes and peaks. Ratings are based on the number of downloads from the App Store and the site also identifies when a new app has become available.

I think this site is definitely worth checking out. Even though I don’t have my iPad yet, I really enjoyed looking at what applications have been developed to date for the iPad. I will probably monitor the site just so I can drool over what I can’t have yet, kind of like eye candy!

Gmail Web Interface Updated for iPad!

I thought Apple and Google were rivals? Either way, Google continues to support the iPhone OS ecosystem, and now they have updated their Gmail web interface for the iPad that will debut tomorrow in the USA.

Here’s the description

While surfing the web on your iPad, we expect many of you will want to check your Gmail. If you go to gmail.com in your browser, you’ll see something different than what you’re used to on the desktop. We’re releasing an experimental user interface for the iPad built on the Gmail for mobile HTML5 web app that we launched last year for the iPhone and Android devices. Those devices have large screens compared to other phones, and tablets like the iPad give us even more room to innovate. To take advantage of the iPad’s large display, we’ve created a two-pane view with your list of conversations on the left and messages to the right.

I think it’s ingenius for Google to replicate how email will look on the iPad and port it over to the web interface. The screenshot above looks awesome. Well done, Google.
