Wrapsol has some of the clearest film protectors and I currently use them on my iPhone 4S and iPad 2. A new product they recently introduced at CES 2012 is the non-slip Grip Pad. This thin film sticks onto the back of your iPad (or any other device), and will allow the device to stay put when it’s resting on your legs or any other surface. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

Within the box you’ll find the large Grip Pad and some simple instructions. The material used is what Wrapsol calls tactilla, a new age gripping technology made from polyurethane. It feels like a cat’s tongue, almost sandpaper-like but much softer and is not sticky at all.

Application is pretty simple. Just peel the backing and stick it onto your iPad. The Grip Pad is really thin so it does not add bulk. Once applied, I was able to rest my iPad comfortably on my thighs on the couch without it slipping. Normally, I would require one hand to prop up the iPad but the Grip Pad solves that problem. Impressively enough, my iPad 2 stayed put on my jeans at an almost 90 degree angle.

Some downsides of the Grip Pad? Obviously it doesn’t look very ‘pretty’ as the classic Apple logo on the back of your iPad will be covered up. Also, I found the Grip Pad to pick up dust and lint easily, but in my early tests it did not affect its grip at all. As for peeling off the Grip Pad (which actually sticks on quite securely), no residue remained.

The Grip Pad retails for $14.95, which isn’t that bad considering it works pretty well. The only issue is the shipping cost to Canada, but in our talks with Wrapsol they told they are currently working on ways to lower costs to Canada. So stay tuned for future updates.

2012 is upon us, and you know what that means? More New Years Resolutions that will flounder for a few weeks and abruptly disappear come spring. While many of our resolutions will never see fruition, I hope your most important ones won’t, and maybe the iPad can come to the rescue. Here are a few ways that your iPad can help.

Health and Fitness

Let’s be honest. The iPad isn’t exactly the most healthy of devices. It may help you get off the couch, but that only means sitting in bed playing Angry Birds or sitting in a coffee shop typing out my next blog article (no judging please!). It certainly doesn’t get you on the treadmill or watching what you eat…or does it? Fortunately, there’s plenty of apps and accessories that does exactly that. Here’s a few choice picks.

Eating Well

Weight Watchers – synonymous with weight loss and healthy eating has a freemium app available in the app store that brings many of the Weight Watchers benefits onto your iPad or iPhone. The free portion of the app is pretty much a healthy eating recipes listing that to inspire healthy living. It features success stories and other features that help encourage you to sign up for the paid service. The paid service opens up more features, recipes and tools that help you track your eating habits and overall health. If you’re already a Weight Watchers member, it’s definitely worth checking out in the App Store.

There are a number of other free apps available to help you staying fit, check out the My Heart&Stroke Health app from the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Staying Fit

Weight Watchers is nice and all, but it doesn’t really get you off the couch and actually move. This accessory, however, may. The Scosche fitRAIL Mount is designed to hang your iPad on the treadmill for easy media consumption as you move. It’s pretty much like having a TV, book stand, and a desktop at your fingertips as you run. The perfect companion for the gym-goer in the winter. Find it at the Apple Store or online for about $50.

Measuring Improvement

But how do you quantify your progress? Well, the Withings Wifi Body Scale can help and even comes with a companion iPad app that allows you to track and share your progress. At $160, it’s not exactly cheap, but it does track your weight, BMI and other health metrics and sends it to the cloud to help you keep it handy wherever you are. If you’re more concerned about heart health, there’s the iHealth Blood Pressure Dock, which helps track and manage your blood pressure, and shares your information with those you care about.

Learning New Languages

If you’re looking for help learning new languages, I’d recommend Rosetta Stone‘s Totale app. It’s a free download, but requires a subscription service with Rosetta Stone to activate it. However, having some experience with the program, I have to admit that it’s worthwhile if you’re serious in learning a new language. Rosetta Stone too pricey? There are plenty of other solutions too – Living Language has a number of apps available for a wide range of languages with 11 free lessons on the app, and so does Berlitz. However, there are plenty of apps to get you started on a new language on the app store.

General Resolution Tracking

Your resolutions don’t really align with mine for 2012? There are a handful of apps that help you track and monitor your resolution progress throughout the year. There are a few available, including Unbroken Chain, Resolutions [2012] and New Year Motivation 2012. All three of which do more or less the same thing. None of these really stood out above the others, but all of them should do the trick.

Whatever your resolution this year, I’m sure the iPad will have an app or an accessory to help you along the way. Even a quick search for ‘self-help’ in the iBooks store turns up a lot of great resources to get started. Even if the Mayans are predicting the end of days this year, it’s still worthwhile to invest a bit more in yourself and work towards becoming a better you.

OnLive the Cloud gaming firm has announced an amazing iOS application which enables its service subscribers to play from a catalogue of Xbox and PlayStation games (such as Rockstar Games’ LA Noire) on their iPads. While the iOS app is pending Apple’s final approval, it will reportedly be available as a free download on the App Store, meaning all you need to pay for is the games. There will also be an OnLive wireless controller ($49.99) fully compatible with the iOS app.

For those who haven’t heard of OnLive before, it is a cloud-based gaming service which uses remote servers to do the harder processing required for complex games and then streams them to your device, such as the iPad. OnLive offers a selection of almost 200 games with more added regularly. 25 of these games are available with touchscreen controls while the rest are playable using the wireless controller. Players can subscribe to the OnLive’s PlayPass for $9.99 per month.

When you touch the iPad’s screen while playing an OnLive game, your touch is beamed to an OnLive server farm where it interacts with the game. Then, video is beamed back to your iPad, all in a split second.

If your internet connection is speedy, it feels like you’re playing a game on Xbox or Playstation 3. And your iPad won’t even get hot. Button presses feel instantaneous. It’s kind of magical.

The source also claims that since all the data processing is being done elsewhere, whatever you’re using to play OnLive doesn’t need to be that powerful. As observed by MacRumors, Apple has silently updated the iPad 2 Smart Covers with some color and material adjustments. Apparently, Apple has discontinued the orange polyurethane cover and has replaced it with a new dark gray cover. The interior color has also been changed from a uniform gray to match the color of the cover’s exterior. The source also claims that the colors on the polyurethane models are now more vibrant.

Here is a brief overview of changes made to Apple’s Smart Covers lineup:

- Interior color now matches exterior color. The interior side of the Smart Cover facing the iPad screen had previously been a uniform gray color on all models with the exception of the (PRODUCT) RED version. All Smart Covers are now a consistent color inside and out.

- More vibrant colors for polyurethane covers. Aside from the replacement of the orange cover with a dark gray one, sources indicate that the colors on the polyurethane models are now more vibrant. Polyurethane Smart Covers come in blue, green, pink, light gray, and dark gray.

- Color adjustment on navy leather cover. Apple offer five different leather Smart Covers, and sources reports that Apple has slightly tweaked the color on the navy version to make it “more navy” than the original version. All other colors (tan, black, cream, and red) remain unchanged.

Pricing for these covers however remains the same with polyurethane covers costing $39.00 while the leather ones still selling for $69.00

• If you want to prop your iPad up in landscape mode, there’s a very simple solution. Inside the cover is a large leather “button”, while on the other side is a leather “string.” Flip the cover of your BookBook open, pull the string over to the button and wrap it around the button, and the BookBook stays open and propped up. I thought this was a classy and simple way to make the iPad a stand.
• Surrounding the BookBook case is a zipper which keeps your iPad safe as well as keeping any documents or notes you wish to place in your BookBook.
• The packaging for the BookBook case is very sharp. Each BookBook comes in a soft plastic bag that protects the surface of the case while it’s being shipped. Slip the BookBook out of the bag, and there’s just a simple paper band covered with marketing info that easily slips off.
• I had no problems with charging my iPad in the BookBook case or while listening to music using the iPad’s built-in speakers.

• The BookBook case for iPad does not include the iPad 2 Smart Cover Technology as it was announced for the original iPad in April, 2010.
• There isn’t a cut-out for the iPad 2 camera in the BookBook case. So you will need to take your iPad out of the case to snap a picture or video. Check out this website to work out this issue.

Overall, this is a beautiful case for both your original iPad and your new iPad 2. The BookBook is perfect for a student, businessperson, or anyone that wants a very elegant and clever iPad case.
