Turn Your iPad Into A Secondary Display With DisplayLink

by on May 2nd, 2011

If you have a Windows PC and an iPad, you can make your iPad a secondary display for your PC for free!

DisplayLink for iPad is a companion application that wirelessly turns your iPad into an extended desktop display. There are numerous benefits to a secondary display, but it is really neat to use your iPad as that display!

With DisplayLink installed on the iPad, the other side of the application is installed on a Windows PC. The link between the host PC software and the iPad app enables the wireless (on the same network) iPad display.

DisplayLink has complete Windows 7, Vista, and XP compatibility. This also means that DisplayLink requires a PC running one of the aforementioned operating systems. In other words, the DisplayLink host software is not Mac-compatible.

When the DisplayLink app is loaded on the iPad, users will receive instructions to download the PC host software. However, the software may also be downloaded from ipad.displaylink.com.

Some of the key feature of DisplayLink:

• Allows you to park your browser, email, social networking site, IM or application control console on the iPad display and avoid application view switching on your primary display

• Operates in true, uncompromised Windows 7 Aero mode.

• Configuration using the familiar Windows graphics display utility

• Connect and disconnect – display repositions automatically

• Operates seamlessly with other DisplayLink multi-monitor and dock products to create a rich, productive multi-monitor environment

Due to the nature of the software, DisplayLink is recommended for office and productivity applications, but not intended for 3D PC gaming or use as a primary display for video playback.

DisplayLink is available in the App Store for free (for a limited time).

Just installed it… it’s actually working quite well. Think I’ll be using this a lot.

crap. I have a mac, but even with BootCamp, I only use win7 for MW2. I have no word processing software on my PC side, so idk what this will be useful for. definitely going to try it though!
