CNN Acquistion of Zite Magazine App Becomes Official

by on August 30th, 2011

Earlier it was reported by TechVibes that Vancouver’s Zite magazine iPad app was rumoured to be acquired by media giant CNN. Today, it has become official as noted by CNN’s Mark Milian:

CNN plans to operate Zite as an independent business, said KC Estenson, senior vice president and general manager of CNN.com, on Monday. In addition to financing Zite’s ongoing development, CNN intends to promote the software on the news organization’s website and television programs, Estenson said.

The main reason CNN acquired Zite was the app itself, as its algorithm used to curate personalized articles was quite groundbreaking. Now, it appears CNN has plans to implement its own technology into the existing app. I really hope this isn’t the end of Zite’s lustre now that it has been sold.

Me too. Hope CNN doesn’t butcher the app too much. However, it is supposed to run as a separate entity, so there’s hope.

All good things come to an end. I will delete ZITE if CNN butchers it :(

This is a great app, I use it on a daily basis. I really hope it stays intact.
