BBC iPlayer iPad App Released in Canada with $8.99 Monthly Fee

by on November 30th, 2011

BBC iPlayer has finally been released in Canada and for the rest of the world. This ‘Global’ version of iPlayer debuts December 1st, but is already available in the App Store.

A launch event took place in downtown Toronto earlier today. BBCWW’s president of Global iPlayer, Jana Bennett, had this to say to RealScreen:

“Canada has always been an enthusiastic supporter of BBC programming, and the Global iPlayer lets us share thousands of acclaimed British shows with one of our most dedicated audiences.

“Canadian subscribers to the global iPlayer will literally have the best of the BBC at their fingertips.”

The app is a free download, and comes with a free trial for 30 selected programs on a ‘one a day basis’. After that, it will cost you $8.99CDN per month or $84.99 annually to get access to the entire BBC catalogue. Is it worth it? Maybe, if you’re a huge fan of BBC shows. That price is more expensive than the monthly cost of Netflix Canada.

iTunes description below:

Watch a selection of the best classic and contemporary British shows on demand, including Doctor Who, Top Gear and Gavin & Stacey. Download the app and explore plus enjoy free clips and taster episodes. Subscribe today for unlimited access – even when you’re offline.

- Watch high quality video and audio streaming over Wi-Fi or 3G
- Download programmes to watch even when you’re not connected
- Browse classic and contemporary programmes by Genre, Most popular, Just in and A-Z
- Set parental locks on content not suitable for kids
- Enjoy exclusive programmes that have never before been seen outside of the UK

This summer, it was reported iPlayer would be updated to include Canada, and that day has arrived. We are the 16th country to receive a localized version of iPlayer. Some shows aren’t available, such as Frozen Planet due to premiere rights (Discovery Canada co-produced the show).

Oh finally! I have been waiting for this for so long!!  $8.99 per month is nothing to pay for superior quality BBC programming!  Nothing can top the BBC!

Can’t find airplay on it though? useless if can’t stream to appleTV

I tried it earlier today, watched the free Holby episode.

Works really great with AirPlay, looked great on my HDTV.

Don’t think I’ll spend the $85/year, I’d burn through my cable 120GB/month too quickly.

It does work with Airplay, but only for steaming content, not downloaded

Streaming VPN is actually pretty good. Just tried it out. I must say the customer support is one of the best as well. :) I was able to get BBC iPlayer in Canada up and running in no time.
