The iPad is the perfect device for the coffee table. Typical items around your coffee table could include photo albums, magazine, books, etc. The iPad can potentially replace all of those. If you want to impress your friends, there’s one app worth checking out–50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic.
This app sorts 50 iconic images that have defined National Geographic over the years. Not only there, each picture includes background information about the moment it was taken, and some include audio and video clips. It’s a really neat app that will stimulate some great conversation in your home.
You navigate between images by swiping left to right. Swipe down, and more info appears. The images are beautiful, and looks stunning on the iPad 2. I did find the multitouch in the app was a bit too sensitive at times, as images would jump to the next when I didn’t want it to. Hopefully this can be addressed in an update.
Here’s one image that has always struck me–the picture of the Afghan refugee girl. The point of view in which the picture was composed brings out the emotion in her eyes. Included with this picture is an update to the story, which some may not have known. She was found 17 years later, and National Geographic did another shot with her–holding her own photo. They analyzed iris patterns to confirm it was her–Sharbat Gula.
The 50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic costs $4.99. It’s not exactly ‘cheap’, but definitely worth it to bring stimulating and captivating images and stories to your coffee table.
