ZAGGfolio Bluetooth Keyboard for iPad 2 Review

by on August 17th, 2011

The last time we reviewed a Bluetooth keyboard was the ZAGGmate, which was neat because it was the first of its kind. However, that keyboard was cramped and had tiny uncomfortable keys. The latest folio case is their ZAGGfolio for the iPad 2, a carbon fibre-look case that houses your iPad 2 and a thin Bluetooth keyboard.

Taking the ZAGGfolio out of the box reveals a sheet of simple instructions and the USB charging cable. The ‘carbon fiber’ design is really light, and feels pretty strong. It fits your iPad 2 and the Bluetooth keyboard together snugly, and will also work with the full body invisibleSHIELD.

Here are some specs:

Weight: 19 ounces (539 grams)
Keyboard only: 11.5 ounces (326 grams)
Folio only: 7.5 ounces (213 grams)
Length: 9.75 inches (247 mm)
Width: 7.625 inches (193 mm)
Depth: .9 inches (23 mm)

An Out of the Box Flaw, But Problem Solved Immediately

The first batch of ZAGGfolios have a defect, where the folio doesn’t latch tightly enough together. ZAGG has addressed this issue and will be sending out free replacements to customers, while letting you keep the one you first purchased. All you have to do is sit back, and wait for it to arrive in the mail. So, with that being said, there should be no issue about the ZAGGfolio not working properly when users receive their courtesy replacements.

After testing out the ZAGGmate, the ZAGGfolio feels much better, and totally is a keyboard worth using. Even with my large hands I had no problems typing quickly without feeling cramped at all. Since the layout has been given a revamp, the iPad 2-specific keys work even better than before.

The Bluetooth keyboard can be removed from the ZAGGfolio easily, so you can type with it and not use the case. It has a study bottom, and the build quality is much better than before, plus it’s really thin. The battery life of the keyboard is also excellent, with the keyboard still going strong after a week of usage. It will last several weeks without charging. This is a very useful keyboard for your iPad 2.

Here are a list of shortcuts that work with the keyboard (just like they did on the ZAGGmate):

Copy: Command C
Cut: Command X
Paste: Command V
Undo: Command Z
End: Command right arrow
Beginning: Command Left Arrow
Page UP: Command Up Arrow
Page Down: Command Down Arrow
Select All: Command A
Select Left: Shift Left
Select Right: Shift Right
Select Down: Shift Down
Select Up: Shift Up

Is the ZAGGfolio worth the $99.99 price tag? That’s up to you, and what your needs are. But from my hands on test of the case and keyboard, the quality has increased significantly over the original ZAGGmate design. The keyboard layout is much easier to use and feels great when typing. The specific shortcuts up top make using your iPad 2 a joy, since you’ll be able to spend more time on the keyboard instead of tapping your screen.

You put all of this into a protective, thin, and light case for both your iPad 2 and keyboard, and I think we one of the best combos for those requiring a physical keyboard.
