Really Cheap iPad Stand

by on June 6th, 2010

Now that you’ve had you’re iPad for a while now, I’m sure you must of put it down once or twice. Have you noticed the iPad is kind of awkward, when trying to find a place to put it down? The iPhone and iPod Touch easily slips into your pocket, or fits on pretty much any flat surface, but it’s not that easy with the iPad.

There is an awesome dock that Apple released at the same time as the iPad, but at price tag of  $35, you’re probably not going to buy one for each room of the house. Neither am I, and that’s why I set out on a quest to find an alternative.

I have seen some tutorials on how to make your own iPad stand, but unless you use the proper materials and get it balanced just right, you risk having your iPad topple to the floor.

My solution, and cheapest I’ve found, is a generic plate stand. It is the perfect size for holding you iPad upright, on a flat surface, keeping your hands free for other things. Great in the kitchen for cooking. Awesome in the studio, for learning to play or sing a new song. Terrific on your desk, while using Air Display to have your iPad as a secondary monitor.

This little plastic doo-hickeys are dirt cheap, and can be found at most dollar stores. I found these on eBay. Nine of them for 1 dollar! This has got to be enough to have a stand in each room in the house.

So, have you found any interesting and innovative ways to hold up your iPad? Comment below!

  • 9 for 1 dollar?! Holy crap the eBay seller must be getting these for 1/10th of a penny! Nice looking iPad you got there! 😉

While I understand how cool it is to be Macgyver on some things, why would you dress your $500 piece of new technology with a dollar store item? The dock works really well and charges at the same time.

Chapters-Indigo sells a real nice bamboo book stand for $20.00. The iPad fits on it perfectly.

What a really good nifty idea. When I purchased my iPad on opening day, I also bought the apple dock and the protective cover. To my dismay, I discovered that I have to take my iPad out of the sleeve everytime I want to put it in the dock. 🙁 It won't make a proper connection otherwise. I'll have to give this a try.

Agreed. I also have the Apple iPad dock, but I'm not buying one for every room in the house, and I'm not going keep moving the dock. I thought of this as a solution for multiple docks.

  • Thanks! Sounds worth having to scatter all over the house and office for $0.99. I never did find the earlier suggested business card stand from Staples so will order this.

Great idea! If you want something a tad fancier, try the small desktop easels a available at artist supply shops. Sturdy and adjustable height and angle.

I'm still keeping my eyes open for a wall mount. I'm working a little chargeable unit wired in behind the wall so you see no wires. Thinking about doing a iPhone version too.

Doesn't the iPad dock only allow you to display the iPad in portrait? The biggest reason I would want a dock/stand is to watch movies or video and would definitely want to view in landscape.

I have the Marware case so I don't really need a stand, but I think the plate stand idea is ideal!

I went with this stand from staples. It's ~$4.00 but it's metal:

I was looking at stands too, im scared to use metal. because i dont use a case, im worried about scratches

  • Ash

It doesn't scratch at all. If you're worried, you can wrap some electrical tape around the stand but I haven't had an issue.

I love my iPad. It has almost completely replaced my personal computer. For the things I do… Is is perfect! Much nicer than any CPU I have ever owned. All my other computers would do a lot of things I would never use it for, and do it painfully in the process (slow, buggy, etc.). When you get down to what you do most on you personal computer… the iPad does almost all of the things an average user needs, and with a much much nicer U/I. Easy of use, fast, and efficient. The other computer manufacturers could learn a thing or two from this, but even if they do… they will probably screw-up the one they come out with by adding all the crap back in again. Ugggggg!!!!

I am sticking with my iPad. I think other will do the same once they try it and realize it is the perfect personal computer 🙂
