iPad USB Fever Hard Shell Case Review & Giveaway!

by on August 6th, 2010

Before I get to the review I wanted to first let everyone know about the iPad Stand from USB Fever that I’ve been using. When I picked it out, I thought it was plastic, but it’s actually this super-strong durable metal – and the quality really impressed me. You’ll see what I use it for in an upcoming iPad App Review, but I wanted to let you know about it now, too. Check it out, coz it’s only $25USD + $2.99 USD Shipping. On with the Review:

I’m still on the hunt for the perfect iPad Case. First there was the Slip Case, and then there was the Book Style Case and both were pretty great, but not exactly what I was looking for. We get closer this time around with a couple Hard Shell Cases from USBFever.com

Firstly, I want to say that I’ve been using USB Fever products ever since I got my first iPhone. Most people might not consider an ‘Asian-Import’ company to be worth their time, but I’ll have you know that I’ve always been pleased with their products, and being that I order quite a few accessories online, I always appreciate a low price tag when it comes to shipping, as Canadians often get crazy-high ‘International’ Shipping Fees. At $2.99 for any product, you really can’t beat it.

On to the cases. I got two very similar cases, basically just a cosmetic difference between the two. First: Crystal Case for iPad, which offers a Translucent look – and is perfect for still showing off any Skin or even the iPad back. The second was the Hard Shell Case for iPad, which comes in fewer colours, and offers nearly opaque plastic.

Both plastic cases cover the entire back and most of the sides of your iPad, with cut outs for the buttons and dock connector, while leaving the front entirely open. I’m not entirely sure who decided why the top and bottom would not have more coverage, nor why there is a mysterious cut out on one side, but for the most part, the sides are safe. The whole case is made from a durable plastic and fit the iPad perfectly, it simply snaps on & off and I haven’t had any issues at all with it coming loose.

The benefits of this style of case is that it basically adds no bulk to the iPad itself. For those folks who love to use their iPads ‘Naked’, or just with a Skin (particularly a screen-only InvisibleShield), but still want some extra protection for when you throw it into a bag (with keys, or who knows what), this is great. Like I previously stated, the Crystal Case is translucent, and I have to say, with my GelaSkin, I’ve gotten more comments/compliments on this case than any other I’ve tried. It looks just so cool.

The great thing about it being so slim is that you could theoretically still use an additional Slip-Case if you were extra worried about damage in a bag or backpack. However, I think that if you had a InvisibleSheld & this, you would be fine. A great alternative to a full on case. Here are the rest of the pics:

Of the two, my outright favorite is the Translucent Crystal Case, which is lucky, because it’s the one that’s less expensive. For only $11.99USD + $2.99USD shipping, you really can’t go wrong. I love it so much, in fact, that I’m not going to give it away. I will however, give away the Black Hard Shell Case;

Cases like these are great. I have never been one to like to 'hide' my devices behind bulky cases. I want to show off my device as it was intented but still keep it protected. My iPod Touch uses a similar case on the back with just a screen protector on the front and it's great like that. No extra bulk on the device and it's still 'sexy'. :)

I'm currently using Apple's slip case for my iPad and it really hids the beauty of the device. With my BoxWave screen protector and this USBFever shell, my iPad could be sexy again!

I love hard shell cases because they're extremely durable and they most often offer the best protection for devices. Also, it might sound weird, but I love how unique it feels when you hold it!

I love this kind of hardshell case because when I'm fighting street crime, it's nice to know there won't be any added bulk to throw my ninja skills out of whack.

    (You said make something up.)

Already have Invisible Shield on mine. Adding this would be perfect :)

This case looks pretty legitt.. Beats the case I have any day (cheap plastic one). Thanks for the offer

The problem with most cases is you don't get to see what you've invested so much money in. A hard shell case with an Invisishield is a great combo.

I love silicone cases. I've had iSkins or similar on all my iPods. But, as the iDevice universe has expanded, I have to dock my devices more and more often: the desk, the clock radio, the car, the cottage. This is where the silicone case becomes a problem. I can remove it, but I don't like having the device “unprotected”. Hence, the rise of the thin plastic cases. I can use the device without a silicone case, able to dock, but not completely unprotected. Thanks, USBFever.com!

  • iVictoria

Silicone vs. hard shell that is the question! I'm sold on the hardshell casing for the iPad as it allows for easy docking and provides greater protection to the valuable unit inside. Thanks for the post Chantelle!

I wanna win this! Hard shell covers are obviously much better and black is great to cover up minor scrapes, just use a black permanent marker

That Purple is bad in the good way. I want it.

  • Stan

This loks like a great case. Much better than the Apple case I am currently using.
